History
Shortly after graduating from Washington County’s Vernon High School, Carolyn Hinson moved to Tallahassee to study cosmetology in 1954. Immediately after graduation and receiving her cosmetologist’s license she went to work for Alice Melton and Gladys Riles at Alice’s Beauty Center in the Duval Hotel building. It was soon evident to both Alice and Gladys that to keep the ambitious Carolyn they would have do something.

A new shopping plaza was being planned for the outskirts of Tallahassee and they decided to expand their business by opening a second salon. Offering Carolyn the chance to become a partner they opened a new salon in the new Capital Plaza (way out Thomasville Road) in 1958. Carolyn became the managing partner of Suburban Salon.
A 2nd Suburban Salon was opened in the Parkway Shopping Center with Gladys moving over from Alice’s to manage that salon. A third Suburban later opened in the Varsity Plaza on West Tennessee Street. Changes started happening in 1981 when Carolyn and Gladys purchased Alice’s interest in both Suburban’s.

Following the deaths of Gladys and Linda and Carolyn’s semi-retirement in 2011 Terri has assumed the day to day management of the Salon. Fortunately for Terri she is able to call on Carolyn’s vast experience when needed. Together these two continue Suburban’s tradition of a salon with a family atmosphere, offering quality services for the whole family.
